Testing before a video call

The useful check is not whether the camera turns on, but what the picture looks like to other people. Record a few seconds with audio on and play it back. That confirms the camera, the microphone, the framing, and the lighting in one pass, which is every part of a call that can embarrass you.

Common questions

How do I test my webcam?

Click Start camera and allow camera access when the browser asks. If you can see yourself, your webcam works. You can also take a photo or record a short clip and play it back.

Why is my camera showing a black screen?

Most often a physical privacy shutter is closed, or a function key has disabled the camera. Check the lens for a sliding cover, then look for a camera key on the top row of your keyboard.

Why does it say another app is using the camera?

Only one application can hold the camera at a time on many systems. Fully close Zoom, Teams, Discord, or OBS, then start the test again.

Is my video recorded or uploaded?

Nothing is uploaded. If you record a clip it is held in your browser memory only, and it disappears when you delete it or close the tab. There is no server storing it.

Can I test my camera and microphone at the same time?

Yes. Leave Record audio switched on and record a short clip. Playing it back confirms both the camera and the microphone in one step.
