Click start, say something, and watch the line move. If it moves, your microphone works.
If the test fails
A microphone showing no level almost always has one of four causes, in the order they usually turn out to be the problem: the wrong input is selected, the input is muted at the operating system level, another application is holding the device, or the browser was never granted permission. Work through them in that order.
Common questions
How do I test my microphone?
Click Start test and allow microphone access when the browser asks. Speak normally. If the waveform moves and the level rises above about 20%, your microphone is working.
Why is my mic level at 0%?
Either the wrong input device is selected, the microphone is muted in your system settings, or a hardware mute switch is on. Use the device picker to try each input in turn.
Why does it say another app is using the microphone?
Windows and macOS give one app exclusive access in some configurations. Close Zoom, Teams, Discord, or OBS completely, then start the test again.
Is my audio recorded or uploaded?
No. The test runs entirely in your browser using the Web Audio API. Nothing is saved to disk and nothing is sent over the network.
