Keyboard keys not working

Which keys are dead matters more than how many. Run the keyboard test above, press every key, and look at the shape of what stays grey.
Scattered, unrelated keys — debris or worn switches. Physical, fixable. A whole row, column, or L-shape — a broken membrane trace or a controller fault. The switches are fine; the wiring behind them is not. Every key — connection, driver, or software. Nothing is physically broken. Keys work but produce wrong characters — layout, not hardware. Skip to section 3.
That single observation saves most of the time people spend on this.
1. Every key dead
Check the obvious connection path first: a different USB port, directly on the machine rather than through a hub, dock, or monitor. Wireless boards need the receiver moved to a front or rear port away from USB 3 ports, which throw enough interference at 2.4 GHz to kill a cheap receiver.
Then check whether it is Windows, not the keyboard. If the board has backlighting and the lights work, it has power and enumeration is likely fine.
Device Manager → Keyboards → uninstall the device → restart. Windows reinstalls on boot.
2. Filter Keys is the software cause nobody checks
Windows has an accessibility feature that ignores brief or repeated keystrokes. It is switched on by holding right Shift for eight seconds, which people do by accident while gaming or leaning on a laptop.
The symptom is exactly like a failing keyboard: keys that need a hard, deliberate press, and repeated characters that do not register.
Settings → Accessibility → Keyboard — turn off Filter Keys and Sticky Keys.
If your keyboard “started needing hard presses” with no other change, this is almost always why.
3. Right key, wrong character
If pressing a key produces a different character, the hardware is fine and Windows is using a different layout.
The tells: @ and " swapped means UK versus US. Q producing A means AZERTY. Numbers needing Shift means AZERTY too.
Settings → Time & language → Language & region — remove layouts you do not use. Win + Space cycles layouts, and that shortcut gets hit accidentally constantly.
Note that the test above uses physical key positions rather than printed characters, so it will show every key as working while Windows outputs the wrong ones. That is the test telling you the problem is software.
4. Three keys at once do nothing
This is not a fault. It is ghosting, and every membrane keyboard has a limit.
Membrane boards share electrical traces between groups of keys. Press certain combinations and the controller cannot tell which keys are down, so it drops them. Cheap boards manage two simultaneous keys, better ones six.
You will meet it in games — walking diagonally while jumping and reloading.
No fix exists on membrane hardware. Mechanical keyboards with N-key rollover solve it because each switch has its own diode. If this is your problem, it is a purchase, not a repair.
5. Scattered dead keys: clean them
- Power off, or unplug
- Turn the board upside down and shake firmly
- Compressed air at an angle across the keys, not straight down — straight down pushes debris further in
- For a stubborn key, prise the keycap off with a flat tool from the front edge and clean underneath
Laptop keycaps are far more fragile than desktop ones and use small plastic scissor clips that snap. If it is a single key on a laptop, weigh the risk before you start.
6. A dead row or block
A row, a column, or an L-shaped group of dead keys means a broken trace on the membrane sheet or a failed controller. Individual switches do not fail in geometric patterns.
On a desktop keyboard this is not economically repairable. On a laptop it is a keyboard assembly replacement.
If the machine had liquid spilled on it, this is the expected outcome, and it can appear weeks later as corrosion spreads along a trace.
Settle it in one step
Plug the keyboard into another computer, or another keyboard into this one. That separates hardware from software definitively, and it takes a minute.
