Touch screen not responding

Run the touch screen test above and drag across the whole grid. The pattern of what fails tells you which problem you have.
Nothing responds at all — driver or the screen is disabled. Section 4. One region dead, rest fine — protector, or a digitiser fault. Sections 1 and 5. A dead strip along one edge — ribbon connection. Section 5. The screen registers touches you did not make — almost certainly your charger. Section 2.
1. Take the screen protector off
Test again with it removed, not just cleaned.
A protector with trapped air, dust, or a lifted edge produces exactly the symptom of a dead zone. Thick tempered glass on a phone with low touch sensitivity does too, and cheap protectors degrade over months so the problem appears long after fitting.
This is the most common cause and the fastest to rule out. Do it before anything else.
2. Ghost touches: check the charger
If the screen taps, swipes, or scrolls on its own, look at what is plugged in.
A charger with poor isolation or no proper earth leaks a small AC voltage onto the device chassis. Capacitive touch screens work by measuring tiny changes in capacitance, and that leakage is enough to look like a finger. The screen is fine; it is being fed electrical noise.
Test it: unplug the charger and use the device on battery for a few minutes.
If the ghost touches stop, the charger is the cause. Third-party and unbranded chargers are the usual offenders, but original chargers on ungrounded two-pin wall sockets do it too — which is why it appears in some rooms and not others.
Same effect can come from a poorly grounded USB hub or dock.
3. Palm rejection and gloves
Windows and most tablets ignore large contact areas so your palm does not register while writing with a stylus. Gloves, long sleeves, and resting your hand can trip this and make the screen appear unresponsive in one area.
Test with a single clean fingertip and nothing else touching the glass.
Very dry skin, screen protectors marketed as matte, and cold hands all reduce capacitance enough to cause intermittent response.
4. Nothing responds at all
On Windows, the touch screen is a separate device that can be disabled — including by accident, or by a driver update.
Device Manager → Human Interface Devices → look for HID-compliant touch screen.
- Not listed — the digitiser is not being detected at all. Hardware or connection.
- Listed with a down arrow — it is disabled. Right-click, Enable.
- Listed normally but not working — right-click, Uninstall device, then restart. Windows reinstalls it.
If it disappeared after a Windows update, check the driver tab for Roll Back Driver first.
5. A dead strip or a fixed region
Straight-line dead areas, especially along an edge, point at the digitiser ribbon rather than the glass. The ribbon runs behind the display and connects at one edge, so a partly unseated connector kills a band rather than a random patch.
This is common after a drop, and after a screen replacement where the connector was not fully clipped.
It is a repair, not a setting. Nothing in software will restore it.
6. Heat and cold
Touch digitisers drift outside their operating range. A phone left in a hot car or used outdoors below freezing will respond poorly or not at all, and recover completely once back to room temperature.
If the fault only appears in specific conditions, this is why, and there is nothing to fix.
Recalibration
Windows: search for Calibrate the screen for pen or touch input, then Setup.
Be clear about what this does. It re-teaches Windows where touches land, which corrects an offset — touches registering slightly away from your finger. It does nothing for a genuinely dead region, because the screen is not reporting anything there to calibrate.
