AirPods playing in one ear only

One silent AirPod is almost never a broken AirPod. Three things cause most cases, and two of them take under a minute to rule out.

Put both AirPods in and run the speaker test above. It plays each side separately, which is the only reliable way to confirm which one is actually silent. Music will not tell you, because most music is mixed near the centre and sounds close to normal through one earpiece.

1. Check the balance slider

Start here. This is the cause people never find on their own, and it silences one side completely while everything else looks perfect.

iPhone and iPad have a stereo balance slider buried in accessibility settings. When it sits at one end, that side gets no audio at all.

Open Settings, then Accessibility, then Audio & Visual. Look at the Balance slider.

Drag it back to the centre. There is no marker, so watch for the point where it snaps into place and the L and R numbers even out.

It drifts. A stray touch moves it, and children playing with a phone move it a long way. Once it is off centre, nothing else on the phone hints that it happened.

On a Mac, the same setting lives in System Settings, then Sound, then Output. Select your AirPods and check the Balance slider underneath.

2. Clean the speaker mesh

If the balance is centred, look at the AirPod itself.

The speaker sits behind a small mesh inside the part that goes in your ear. Earwax builds up in that mesh gradually, and it does not take much to block it. This is the most common physical cause and it is entirely fixable.

Use a dry soft brush. A clean toothbrush works well. Brush across the mesh, never into it. Do not use water, alcohol, or anything sharp. Pushing debris inward turns a cleanable problem into a permanent one.

Compare the two AirPods side by side under a light. The blocked one is usually obvious once you know what to look for.

3. Check the Mono Audio setting

In the same Accessibility, then Audio & Visual panel, there is a Mono Audio switch.

This does not cause silence, but it does cause confusion. With Mono Audio on, both AirPods play the same combined signal, so a genuinely failing side is much harder to detect and stereo recordings sound flat.

Turn it off while you are diagnosing, so each side plays its own channel.

4. Reset the AirPods

If the balance is centred and the mesh is clean, reset them. This clears any bad connection state stored on the AirPods themselves.

1. Put both AirPods in the case and close the lid
2. Wait thirty seconds
3. Open the lid, leaving the AirPods inside
4. On your phone, open Settings, Bluetooth, tap the i next to your AirPods, and choose Forget This Device
5. Hold the button on the back of the case for about fifteen seconds, until the light flashes amber and then white
6. Hold the open case near your phone and pair again

You will need to pair them with your other devices again afterwards.

5. When one AirPod will not connect at all

If one AirPod shows no battery level and never joins, it has lost its pairing with the other one.

Put the silent AirPod in the case, close the lid, and leave it for at least thirty seconds so it can charge and re-sync with its partner. Then do the full reset in step 4.

Check the charging contacts too. Look at the metal tip of the stem and at the bottom of the case well it sits in. Lint in the case well stops one AirPod charging, and a flat AirPod behaves exactly like a broken one.

6. Check whether it is one app

If both sides work in the test above but one is silent in a particular app, the fault is that app.

Many apps have their own audio settings and some have their own balance control. Check inside the app before assuming anything about the hardware.

Browser tabs can also be muted individually. Look for a small speaker icon on the tab and click it.

When it is genuinely broken

If one AirPod stays silent after a reset, with a clean mesh, centred balance, and on more than one device, that AirPod has failed.

Apple replaces individual AirPods rather than the pair, so this costs far less than people expect. AirPods carry a one year warranty and AppleCare extends it.

Book an appointment before buying a replacement set. Bring both AirPods and the case, since the technician will test all three parts.
